ICT Engineering at UPV/EHU

The University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) is a polytechnic university of Spain and part of the EDINSOST Project. It has more than 35,000 students and 80 university degrees (data from the 2021/2022 academic year) [1].

In the current situation to improve teaching about sustainability in the Telecommunication degree, the university does not have any normalized contents in actual study programs. It is found interest in the field and the transversal competences reflect some of the items about sustainability:

  • T4: Ability to solve problems with initiative, decision making, creativity, and communicating and transmit knowledge, skills and abilities, understanding the ethical and professional responsibility of the activity of the Telecommunications Technical Engineer.
  • T7: Ability to analyze and assess the social impact and environmental protection of technical solutions.
  • T9: Ability to work in a multidisciplinary group and in a multilingual environment and to communicate, both by written as well as orally, knowledge, procedures, results and ideas related to the telecommunications and electronics.

New rearranged transversal competences present in the study programs:

  • T41437 Solve problems with responsibility.
  • T42921 Written expression.
  • T42922 Oral expression.
  • T91 Group work.

Furthermore, there are some research groups center on removable energies that highlight the interest of the students in sustainability. 

At the present state, teachers are being interview on how they applied the transversal competences in order to become acquainted of the level that these topics are being treated. Afterwards, the study programs are wanted to be reviewed to introduce the missing sustainability contents.
